Learning more about the world of photography and photographers...
During sessions there are always names flying around of photographers that i haven't heard of, i always make sure i take a note of them but they seem to get lost in my notebook never to be seen again.
So this time i have decided to make a 'Research List' and everyday after uni i will transfer the names of the photographers onto a note document on my computer, i will then aim to research and learn about each of these photographers turning their names RED when i have researched them.
We have been in university for approximately ten days now and the list is already rather lengthy,
Here it is so far...
Paul Graham
Nan Goldin
Nicholas Provost
Richard Avedon
Hirsoshi Sugimoto
Jim Goldberg
Mark Neville
Zed Nelson
Wendy Ewald
Graham is an fine-art photographer who's work has been exhibited, published and collected internationally. In 2012 he received the Hassleblad Foundation International Award in Photography...
He moved to the USA in 2002 and set out on many trips around the united states to see and photograph the country for himself. The resulting series is called ' a shimmer of possibility ' which Graham then published into twelve volumes. Each series contains a varying number of photographs and are all simple but structurally inventive. They provide a vivid glimpse into moments in the lives of individuals.
Graham said "Perhaps instead of standing at the river's edge scooping out water, it's better to be in the current itself, to watch how the river comes up to you, flows smoothly around your presence, and reforms on the other side like you were never there."
The images displayed on his website are displayed in an unusual manner with a lot of white space around the image with the image varying in size and positioning as you click through ...
Nan Goldin...
Goldin is an american photographer, her first solo show held in Boston was based on her photographic journeys among the cities gay and transsexual communities. She has always been very concerntrated on the unusual scenes of america, the hard rock music scenes of new york and the gay subculture.
One of her most famous series The Ballad of Sexual Dependency consists of snapshot aesthetic images which depict drug abuse, violence, aggression. Many of Goldin's subject were dead by 1990's due to AIDS or drug overdose.
When watching The Genius Of Photography there is a section where Nan Goldin is interviewed and she is asked why she takes photographs? Her response is one unlike most others she states 'I take photographs so that i never loose anybody'. She then goes on to explain that all these people with drug problems and hard lives that she photographs arent going to live very long so she feels that by photographing them she enables them to stay alive through photography. She see's all of her subjects as her friends and because she has images of them she feels she will never truly loose them even when they are no longer alive.
The main themes in her work are love, gender domesticity and sexuality.
Nicholas Provost...
Provost is a trans-media video artist, he uses mathematical editing techniques to create unsettling and attention grabbing suspension.

Richard Avedon...
Avedon was a american fashion and portrait photographer, his work was described as defining America's image of style, beauty and culture. His work has featured in the likes of Harper's Bazaar, Life and Vogue.
From researching Avedon i don't think theres anything he hasn't done. He won many awards for his photography including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the council of fashion designers of america in 1989.
I absolutely love Avedon's work, he is really inspiring to me and i adore his creativity.

Hiroshi Sugimoto...
Hiroshi Sugimoto is a Japanese photographer, he describes his work as an expression of 'time-exposed' or photographs acting as a time capsule. He specialises in long exposures and has been named one of the most highly technical photographers.
He attempts to reveal time in still photography, to do this he does images such as exposing an image for the whole length of a movie resulting in a bright white light as the screen, showing that time has passed.
Jim Goldberg...
I recently looked at the work of Jim Goldberg in relation to a series of images i was creating.
"I have the great privilege of being both witness and storyteller. Intimacy, trust and intuition guide my work."
Goldberg lets his subject write, draw and illustrate his images after they are printed. This adds personality to the images and lets you see more of an insight into who the person in the image is.
Here are the images i produced inspired by Jim Goldberg...
Mark Neville...
Neville is a social documentary photographer, one of his most popular series is 'Deeds not words'. This series is where Neville worked with the community of Corby, Northamptonshire. Over an 18 month period he photographed the town, its people, its culture and the effects of environmental pollution that led to several babies being born with serious birth defects.
Zed Nelson...
Zed Nelson is a documentary photographer, mainly working in the troubled areas of the world documenting contemporary social issues. Gun Nation is a series of work by Nelson in which he looks at Americas deadly love affair with the gun.
He looks at the people of america and ask them why they own a gun etc
Wendy Ewald...
Wendy Ewald is an american photographer and educator, she collaborates with children, families, women and teachers. Her work started off as documentary investigations of places and communities and posed questions of identity and cultural differences. She makes photographs within the communities and lets the children write on the negatives, like the work of Jim Goldberg, challenging the concept of who makes the photograph.
We have been asked to display our targets in the form of a presentation and to illustrate them by taking our own stock imagery. We will then be presenting this to the rest of our course which will aid me as it will be practising my target 1 'speaking about my work in front of large groups of people.'.
Here are the stock images i took:
Target 1: To gain confidence in talking in large groups about my work.

Here are the stock images i took:
Target 1: To gain confidence in talking in large groups about my work.
I took this image when i went to London for a day, the man in the hat and glasses is JR, an inspiration of mine and i noticed he was bringing his photo booth on wheels to London so didn't want to miss it for the world! I tweeted him when i arrived and he offered me to go to the premiere of his film about the photo booth traveling around the world so this was taken in the theatre before the film started.
Target 2: Learn more about the studio and how to use it to its full ability.
For the past few weeks i have been booked into the studio once a week, this was to complete images for my video brief but it gained me lots of confidence in setting up the studio quickly and correctly to ensure my model wasn't waiting around. I also decided to use the use of projection as it had interested me for a while. I asked around and John found this old OHP projector in the stock cupboard so i got it out and had a play around, i think this is a new and exciting piece of equipment to use in the studio and i had lots of fun playing around with projecting writing onto my models.
Target 3: Technical training
I have a basic knowledge of photoshop but there is certainly more i can learn, during the other module we learnt how to use Adobe premiere for making videos and that was really new to me but i got the hang of it in the end. I also want to test of using a flash gun for outside and inside lighting.
Target 4: Learning more about the world of photography and photographers.
As i am more of a practical person i feel the best way to get information to stick in my brain is to actually go out and see it, therefore i took a trip to the Liverpool galleries and exhibitions with Gwen which was great (i will be doing a post on that), then i went to London to see the JR exhibition and premiere which was great and i learnt a lot and also i am going to London again on wednesday 10th December to the photographers gallery to see the exhibition put together by Susan Bright on Representations of Motherhood which i am excited about! I have also been reading plenty of books to make sure i can contextualise my work.
Target 5: Learning how to get my work out there after i graduate.
I am hoping to set up a photography based twitter account, design new business cards and learn from guest speakers on how they went about it.
